Hotel Description: Richly laden with history and set in the very heart of a dashing and opulent Rome, this splendid establishment opens its doors to those eager to experience the lofty, blasé charm of the world's most pampered capital. Even before they enter, guests standing in the delightful small square in front of the entrance are already enveloped in the Baroque mystique of the architecture and the intimately sovereign atmosphere that once greeted popes, kings and emperors. Small spaces, the most elegant of salons, fascinating mazes that lead to enchanting rooms epitomizing authentic and never overstated luxury. With its Roman Garden, Café Romano and small English Bar, the Hotel d'Inghilterra is the place you will choose at first sight as your beloved Roman residence. The walls of the Hotel d'Inghilterra have watched the flow of centuries transform their surroundings. Situated in the breathtakingly beautiful part of Rome that first greets travelers entering through the gate known as "Porta del Popolo", the building was erected halfway through the 16th century to accommodate guests of the princely Torlonia family. After being put to a whole variety of different uses, it became the Hotel d'Angleterre in 1845. From the 15th century on, the entire area around Trinità dei Monti had been host to large communities of cultured foreigners who made Rome their second home. Those staying "all'Inghilterra", to use the characteristic Roman expression, still experience an inexplicable feeling of déjà vu in their rooms today, a sense of homecoming even on their first visit. The walls bear no inscriptions, but you are aware with every step you take that they have accommodated the greatest names in history and literature. It was in the Hotel d'Inghilterra that Pedro V of Portugal received a visit from Pope Pius IX on 2 July 1855. Ready even then to proclaim its powerful identity to the world with unabashed elegance, the establishment soon became a favorite meeting place for the international cultural elite and aristocracy. Hemingway and Mark Twain, Ungaretti and García Márquez, Calvino and Andersen, Alec Guinness and Prince Philip of Edinburgh have all found their Rome "all'Inghilterra". After the painstaking refurbishment carried out over the last few years by top architects and art historians, the Hotel d'Inghilterra fully embodies the lofty style of Rome's stateliest mansions and has been selected as a member of the Royal Demeure Hotel Group. Since ancient times, Rome has always had a natural inclination for the salon, where the fate of the world is decided while reclining comfortably. This is a tradition that lives on in the small salons of the Hotel d'Inghilterra, overflowing with splendid Neapolitan gouaches and linked to one another like a string of pearls. This is the classic meeting point for an aperitif in the superbly appointed English Bar or tea in the new Café Romano, an absolute must. Over the last two years, many have also taken advantage of the opportunity to organize top-flight business meetings or sumptuous banquets in the two splendid frescoed halls of the Palazzo Torlonia situated directly opposite. As befits an authentic private residence, each room has its own distinct and inimitable identity. From the corridors on, each area is furnished in the most exquisite classic Roman style of the last century. Delightful antiques, damask and silk, Chinese porcelain, and huge Baroque mirrors adorn all the rooms. This grandeur is also endowed with simplicity to leave space for the views of Rome, a captivating spectacle that begins with the first light of dawn. The regal comfort of the rooms forms an ideal complement to the beauty of the Eternal City, a sea of rooftops, terraces and domes to be savored sitting out on the balcony in the warm sunshine or from the great terrace of the panoramic suite, where the view is breath-taking and gladdens the heart. This bijou suite is a home away from home with its own fireplace, yellow sitting room, study in 19th-century style, and countless books. The equally elegant bedroom bashfully withdraws before the great terrace dominating the Roman skyline. You are cut away from the world up here, your privacy invaded only by the fragrance of the flowers.
The Roman Garden and English Bar At the bottom of the steps, a small marble statue heralds the entrance to the splendors of ancient Rome. Once the hotel's main restaurant and now devoted to the sumptuous rite of breakfast, the Roman Garden greets you with a maze of frescoed rooms, a dreamy Pompeian atmosphere, and an explosion of trompe l'oeil. The English Bar is a trip through time, a small corner of England measuring a few square yards, just enough to change the accent and furnish an unmistakable reminder of the hotel's origins. There is something magnetic about its austere keynote of ultra-refined black and the original prints of hunting scenes and the English countryside hanging on the walls. This tiny room attracts customers from all over the world for an aperitif or the time-honored pint of ale. The Café Romano A blend of classic and modern is seldom achieved. Here at the Café Romano, recently refurbished by artists and architects, the feat has been performed so successfully as to banish all memory of the previous structure. From the terracotta-colored vaulted ceiling to the intriguing lights and the broad columns dividing up the space, every detail is designed to be savored at length all through the day, from the morning to late at night. Each dish on the cosmopolitan menu is cooked in accordance with authentic recipes from the world's different culinary traditions. This ambitious undertaking is performed to unanimous acclaim by the genius of Rodolfo Chieroni, one of the chefs most in favor with the world's potentates, and indeed with Woody Allen, who once enjoyed an unforgettable cacio e pepe here.
